The town, which got its name from a salt spring, is located north of Kladno in a gently rolling landscape full of fields and hop fields.
Slánská hora is a remnant of turbulent volcanic activity; people in its vicinity lived continuously from the late Stone Age until the establishment of the settlement that became the foundation of today’s city.
What you have to see in Slaný
In the city center you can admire the remains of the city walls with the Velvary Gate. On the square Masaryk Square and in the surrounding streets there are a number of valuable houses, the origins of which date back to the Renaissance period, the dominant feature of the square is the town hall with a forty-meter high tower. The former Piarist dormitory now houses the Museum of Local History and a library, and the church buildings include the three-nave Church of St. Gothard with a prismatic tower and an interesting portal, and the monastery of the Discalced Carmelites with the Church of the Holy Trinity.
Celebrities from Slaný
Many interesting people were born in Slaný and its surroundings or lived there for some time, for example the writer Václav Beneš Třebízský, the painter Josef Navrátil, the composer of film music Zdeněk Liška, the agrarian politician Josef Malypetr, the director Karel Smyczek, the opera singer Eva Urbanová and the actress and writer Olga Scheinpflugová, the wife of Karel Čapek. She was born in house no. 565 on Na Hradbách Street, worked in Prague at the Vinohrady Theatre and was a member of the National Theatre from 1929 until her death.
Sweet Weekend, Stone Shepherd and Other Pleasures
You can get to know the city during the Sweet Weekend in Slaný, when the tourist information center offers a number of tips on how to spend an attractive weekend with your family and children.
For example, you can swim in the aqua park, taste beer from the Antoš brewery, or go to nearby Klobuk, where, just off the road, stands what is probably the largest menhir in the Czech Republic, called the Stone Shepherd. Originally, it was surrounded by a “petrified herd” of smaller stones, which, however, had to give way to modern agricultural technology.
